The problems of English Speaking Skill Encountered by the ٍٍStudents of the Red Sea University (A case Study in the Faculties of Education and Arts)

Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the problems of speaking skills of English as a foreign language. The research’s main interest was to investigate the deficiency among the learners of English language at the (RSU) particularly among those who specialized in English in the faculties of Education and Arts. The study used the descriptive analysis and focused on the speaking skill. The tools which used in the study a questionnaire to the students both males and females and a written interview for their teachers, and that resulted in the following findings: Most of the students have a problem of speaking English due to the fear of making mistakes. The surrounding environment is not supporting the students to speak English well. The absence of English related activities hindered the students from acquiring speaking skill properly. The gradation of curriculum is not convincing, in addition to that the syllabus is not well designed to enable the students to speak competently. The available activities in the (RSU) were not quite sufficient to make the students deal with the speaking English skill very well. According to the above findings, the researcher suggested the following recommendations: Impose a regular and intensive English related activity to make the students engage in speaking processes. Encourage the students to join extra-curricular activities which are associated with speaking skill, such as online conversations and English clubs. Motivate the students to speak more, through organizing English speaking competitions. Provides the University with the visual teaching tools , to facilitates the learning process.

المستخلص هدفت هذه الدراسة إلى التحقيق من نقص مهارة التحدث باللغة الانجليزية حيث أن البحث تحقق في هذه المشكلة لدى طلاب اللغة الانجليزية في جامعة البحر الأحمر. اتبع البحث المنهج الوصفي التحليلي من خلال تصوير وصفي للمشكلة ، ثم شرع في تحليلها لإيجاد الحلول من خلال عدة آليات تمثلت في استبيانات وجهت لعينات من الطلاب (ذكور/ إناث) ومقابلات أسندت للأساتذة الذين يقومون بتدريس اللغة الانجليزية. وقد استخدم البحث طلاب كليتي التربية والآداب. ومن ثم قام البحث بمناقشة وتحليل النتائج التي تم التوصل إليها على النحو التالي: - يواجه معظم طلاب التربية والآداب بجامعة البحر الأحمر مشكلة تتعلق بالخوف من حدوث أخطاء أثناء التحدث باللغة الانجليزية التي يودون التواصل بها . - وجد الباحث أن البيئة المحيطة غير مساعدة في كثير من الأحيان في إكساب الطلاب مهارة التحدث باللغة الانجليزية. - غياب الأنشطة المرتبطة باستخدام اللغة الانجليزية يمنع الطلاب من التحدث بشكل جيد. - التدرج في مناهج تدريس اللغة الانجليزية ليس مقنعاً بجانب أن المواد المقدمة في المناهج نفسها لم تكن كافية لتمكين الطلاب من تلقي اللغة بكفاءة عالية. - الأنشطة المتاحة بالجامعة ليست كافية بالقدر الذي يمكن الطلاب من التعامل مع اللغة الانجليزية بشكل جيد. وبالتالي ووفقا لهذه النتائج التي توصل إليها الباحث ، فقد اقترح بعض الحلول لتحقيق هدف الدراسة.
