Abstract The study investigates the impact of English Word Stress Patterns towards competence Achievement for EFL learners. It tackles the rules that are used for facilitation learning and acquisition of English word stress patterns for Sudanese EFL learners. It highlights the roles of learned and acquired knowledge of English Word stress patterns for Sudanese EFL learners. It elucidates the obstacles that face the Sudanese EFL learners in English Word stress when it comes to the production task. It clarifies the similarities between English language and Sudanese formal native language (Arabic) in terms of word stress patterns. The study used analytical descriptive method for reaching the current results. The study instrument is test consists of eighteen words, divided into three groups based on the number of syllable – six disyllabic words (three with initial syllable stress and other three with ultimate syllable stress). Six trisyllabic words (two with ultimate syllable stress, two with penultimate syllable stress and two with antepenultimate syllable stress), and six quadrisyllabic words (two with penultimate syllable stress, two with antepenultimate syllable stress. All the eighteen words were consistent with the regular stress patterns of English. The results of the study are the following: Sudanese EFL learners are able to pronounce the stressed syllable correctly on real English words with help of stress markers. English Word stress patterns’ learned knowledge plays significant roles in facilitation the correct pronunciation of English language words. Sudanese EFL learners come across difficulty to detect the stress syllable in terms of the lexical class of words ( verb, noun, adjective) when it comes to production task whereas, they easily determine the stressed syllable of words in terms of their syllable structure due to the similarity between their formal native language (Arabic language ) and the target language (English language ), as they scored high correct level in ultimate and penultimate word stress. It is possible that, although leaners with predictable L1 stress may lost the conscious ability to locate stress, they still have the concept of word stress – level and unconsciously process the stress variation in the input that they receive in the L2 and FL to find some level of regularities.
